With Wimbledon in full swing, former British number one Greg Rusedski took time out from commentating duties today to join pupils at Chesterton Primary School in Battersea to check out the changes in tennis which are taking the nation’s youngsters by storm.
The Tennis Foundation (TF), supported by the Lawn Tennis Association, (LTA) has been implementing the AEGON Schools Tennis strategy to increase children’s access to tennis and Rusedski was on hand to see the new style tennis delivery in action.
Chesterton Primary School PE Co-ordinator Hein Bester said: “The AEGON Schools Tennis program is an amazing asset to our school. For the teacher, it takes away any fear of coaching tennis and supports us through all the major stages of the game. I would like to thank the Tennis Foundation for supplying the equipment and training free of charge through the School Sport Partnership and buying into every child's physical development and well being. The impact has been immense where we've moved from about 20% of children getting tennis coaching to 100%.”
Jenna Luiten, Assistant PDM said "The morning of tennis was thoroughly enjoyed by the children, and they were particularly excited about Greg visiting. After watching how simple it was to lead the lesson, I hope other schools in the partnership can adopt the AEGON Schools Tennis program into their school with our support."
