17 Wandsworth athletes identified as having sporting potential were invited to attend the Central and South London County Athlete Assessment Day (CAAD) which took place on July 8th at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.
Playground to Podium, led by Sport England in partnership with the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), Interactive, the Youth Sport Trust and Paralympics GB, is a series of targeted interventions which collectively aim to create a clear and professional sport pathway from school sport, through to club participation and on to elite performance for disabled people.
Following an Identifying Ability at Southfields Community College the students from Oak Lodge, Linden Lodge and the Hearing Impairment Unit at Southfields joined athletes from three Central London partnerships to show off their skills in the sports of Athletics, Football, Table Tennis and Wheelchair Basketball. Of the 23 that attended over half have been identified as having talent in one or more of the sports they participated and have since been signposted to Disability Centres of Excellence or to clubs providing opportunities to further develop their talent.
Two Wandsworth students particularly caught the eye of the National Governing Bodies of Sport representatives. Wais Fazeli was described as 'fast, accurate, powerful and skilfull', while Shane Robb-Hopwood was highlighted as a 'natural athlete'.
Both have been invited to attend football trials with the Surrey FA. Who knows this could be their first step on the pathway to the London Olympics in 2012.
